Paranoia | A Thriller Story | by Joseph Ayinde

    PARANOIA
Sweaty palms, butterfly in my stomach and my heart pounding so intensely, signs that proved that I was anxious. I was frustrated, my battery was on 3%, there was no light and I had been using the flashlight on my phone. I tried calling Greg once more but his number was unreachable. Soon my phone went off and I was in literal darkness, I paced to and fro in unease. Suddenly someone knocked aggressively and I was frightened, I immediately searched my back pocket and brought out a short knife.
"Who's, who's there" I stuttered, my breathing was erratic and I swallowed hard. There was no response and I was getting increasingly afraid. Was he here? I asked myself, no he couldn't be. If he is here that means my freedom was not in anyway close, my mission had failed..no it can't be.
"Open the door or I will break it down" came the voice from outside. I couldn't quite place the voice but it sounded like Greg. At this point I couldn't be sure of anything, he could be masking his voice, I couldn't place any deeds of mischief beyond him. I couldn't just stand here, I had to do something.
    "I'm coming" I replied.
I eventually opened the door and I would have designed the person's face with the knife if not that he held my hand.
"Chill it's me Greg" he said panting heavily.
"Close the door, close every opening here" he said.
I quickly did that without hesitation.
"What's happening Greg, how did it go?" I asked.
"You are free, he is gone" he replied.
I felt relived but then I also tried to understand what he had just said to me.
"Gone..what do you mean by gone?" I asked.
"I mean he is gone forever, he cannot torment you ever again..at least not in the flesh. Cheer up" Greg said.
"What have you done Greg?" I asked terrified.
"Everything, everything I did, I did it for you" he said. He seemed so sure of himself.
"You do not seem to realize what you have done, you have put our lives at risk" I said almost visibly shaking.
He moved closer and held my shoulder.
    "It will be all right"
Suddenly we heard someone knocking, we were both terrified.
"I will check it out, stay here" Greg said. He then took the knife I almost used to attack him earlier.
He opened the door, and was talking to the person but I couldn't hear anything, it is nothing really I thought.
In a flash he turned to me and only then did I see that blood was oozing from his mouth. I nearly screamed but I controlled myself.
    "Run Rebecca..run" he said
